Summary:
In her article she states that it is very important to understand what position you hold and who you are in your workplace. She explains that your own identity and the authority you follow effect writing.
QD:
3) I think it was a negative outcome based on that he did not want to change the way he wrote even though it would have been better.
4) I think that it happens very often when people use language without thinking and say things without realizing it or giving it a second thought. When we think about language and realize that we are using it we tend to think a lot more about what we are saying.
5) The fact that Alan wasn't accepted into the discourse community because he didn't want to change the way he wrote, I would agree with Gee.
6) In the community he was going to be used to help fix it and put it back together so that would make him a kind of tool as to put it all back together.
7) In school teacher's are supposed to be the authority figure but when you see them make a mistake, it makes it harder for you to see them as that authority figure.
AEI:
To me this means that when given the authority that people will look to you in guidance but if you are under an authority figure that you must follow the rules.
Response:
I thought that this article was much easier to read than others we have read. I really liked that she made a character that was going through her argument and it made the entire article easier to read.

Cover letter for final group project.
The main point of my groups project is to hear how individuals all have their own views on literacy. To support our theory, we interviewed different people to see their personal backgrounds and then we compared them. As an argument we tried to show is that there is no certain guideline that one person must follow to have strong ideas. Every person is different and learns differently and has different views. Overall I think that our project worked out very well, we have a lot of different views that make our project interesting.

February 22 homework.
Johns Summary:
In her article she gives her own definition of what a discourse community is and how it is a academic discourse community. She talks about how it is possible for people to be in multiply communities at the same time. She also explains the things that are difficult or go wrong in discourse communities.
QD:
1) A complication in a community according to John is one person having authority over every person in that community. Along with that is when there is a disagreement between members within the community and how the authority figure deals with.
2) In her article people in one community had the same goals to strive for and are working to achieve the same thing. She also says that change is a good thing in that when someone had to leave the community that someone would replace that person to make the group complete again.
3) I do not think that my beliefs or values have changed because I have always had the same ideas about how i write and read.
4) I don't think that these things change who you are. I think that they form around who you are and can help you in the future.
5) I think that my authority so far has been my teachers in that they have guidelines they want us to follow when writing a paper for them.
6) It is a mine field in the sense that all teachers are different and you have no exact idea on how they will react to how you break the rules. They could either be extremely disappointed and give you a bad grade to reflect that or they could like what you have to say and take your way into consideration and like your new way that they didn't think of.

The rules help you understand that ins and outs of a community. You will know if you would fit in and belong with the people of that group. You would also feel the pressures of the group if you don't exactly fit and they try to make you conform to something that your are not.

February 20 homework.
Swales summary:
In his article Swales gives a definition of a discourse community by giving it characteristics. He is trying to make it clearer to the readers by arguing with other writers on what a discourse community is. He also uses the characteristics to discuss what is and what is not a discourse community.
QD:
1) First characteristic is having a group and everyone in that group has set goals that they try to reach. Second is having a way to communicate with individuals in an effective way. Third is having a way to communicate with people in the community in an effective way. Fourth is putting the ways you communicate into genres. Fifth is having a specific lingo within the people of a community that helps people communicate. Sixth is to have change within a community and having support.
3) I think that as a first year class would be considered the start of a discourse community and that a graduate class would be the end of one because they will be going off on their separate ways.
5) I would belong to a discourse community of the volleyball team. We all have the same goal of winning and doing the best of our personal ability to win. We communicate as in telling the other players on the court where the ball is and calling out ahead of time where you want the ball to go. The changes we encounter is when we rotate positions.
MM: This article helped me realize that discourse communities are more common than most people realize and with writing there are a lot of them. This was helpful for people to be able to navigate through discourse communities.
Swales response: I personally got a better understanding of what a discourse community is from the specific definition and the characteristics that he give them. This article helps me view things in a different way.
Gee summary:
In his article he gives his own idea on the meaning of discourse and how it relates and affects a discourse community. He gives many details into the community. In this article he argues the opposite side of what we read from Swales.
QD:
3) With a capital D he says it ia a type of identity kit which comes complete with the appropriate costume and instructions on how to act, talk, and often write to take on a particular role that others will recognize. With a lower case d he is talking about the group as a whole.
4) Primary discourse are initial and only contain themselves. Secondary discourse are both dominant and non-dominant bring you things such as wealth.
5) It means that identity is that main idea in discourse and it is all about the individual. Based on his definition it shows that it is true.
6) Its connected with identity because is what you believe not what you learn. It goes with what he states in that its not what you are taught but what you believe.
7) He talks about how in groups we use language correctly and incorrectly. A situation where this happens would be with my volleyball team and if someone uses the wrong form we would all know because we have been doing the same thing for so long.
8) The benefits are how people in a community decide whether someone can be part of that discourse community. It helps the people in charge of the community see how the community is growing and how it would change after they leave.
11) Meta-knowledge is knowing something but not having to focus on it as you do it. Blinking is an example because you blink based off your in stinks not actually making yourself blink every few seconds.
12) I know I am part of the volleyball discourse community because i have played it for 7 + years and I intend to be able to teach it in the future.

I thought this reading was really difficult and hard for me to fully understand as well as the Swales reading. I didn't realize that so many discourse communities existed.

cover letter for group project
The main point of my group's project was to get the understanding from other people about their personal views on literacy. We made a video of our interviews we did with people to support our idea. The argument we made was that people don't need to stay set on certain guidelines like they may have been taught. The project from my opinion worked really well because we interviewed people from different backgrounds that didn't have the same views.

Cover letter and final paper #2
With this paper I tried to show the process of how I write. My main claim was that I consider myself a one draft writer and that I don't consider myself a good writer. To support my claim I wrote through the process that I go through when I write papers or articles. I think the good things about my paper were the details that I showed how I go about writing a paper. The parts of my paper that I am not too sure about are the intro and the conclusion because I wasn't positive how to go about them.
